Music
June 12, 2007 at 12:17 am | In Music, Rants | 1 CommentI recently had a conversation with a friend about music. This friend assumed that I would like a band because they were “screamy”. This pissed me off. I don’t like music because it has “screaming” in. On the contrary, I would prefer it if all the bands that I listen to that do “scream” sung their lyrics instead. But, this is sometimes unavoidable.
I listen to music primarily because of the emotion it brings. If you look to the roots of music, emotion was the major factor involved. People disagree with my music tastes. So what, these people like different things because different genres (a concept that I dislike in itself) because different things touch them. An adjacent example would be that some people get turned on by different things. Or like different foods. Opinions are not a hard concept to grasp. But for me, music is different to sex, or food. Music is what gets me through events. It stops me killing myself at work, it helps me revise, or do coursework. It gets me through hard times. When things don’t work out well. It also emphasises good times. But the common factor in all of the examples here is that it affects my emotions.
Screaming in music doesn’t affect my emotions much. Quite a lot of people who know me think that the main factor in my judgment of music is the actual musical talent. I used to believe this. But recently I have realised that it is purely the way music makes me behave that is the decision-maker. If it makes me want to cry, or gets me angry, or makes me mad, or makes me happy then it’s good music.
So don’t judge my music tastes, and I won’t judge yours.
Also, sorry if the text rambles a bit, I just want to convey the message properly.
Behind the Box
June 7, 2007 at 10:20 am | In Questions, Rants | 2 CommentsI just want to know how wires get tangled up behind TV’s even if you haven’t moved them, touched them or even looked at them for the entire time they’re there. I recently rearranged my bedroom to suit my needs better and I know for a fact that I haven’t touched anything behind the television OR the computer for the entire six months they’ve been in the position I left them in, but it still took me an entire twenty minutes just unraveling cables. Is there a new physical force or something?
AS Level Exam Results
August 18, 2006 at 7:54 am | In Academia, Rants | 5 CommentsI’ve been Mr. Nopost for so long because I’ve had better things to do, but there is a topical piece of crap that I am about to write.
My exam results:
B in maths (missed an A by one mark); B in politics; B in Physics; C in chemistry (missed out by three marks).
Can you see why I am unhappy? One more night’s revision and It would have been A, B, B, B; so much better than B, B, B, C. ROAR! I will remember this next year when I am torn between social activities and revision.
Who Shall Host Me?
August 4, 2006 at 8:31 am | In Rants, Site News, Teh Intarwebnets, Wordpress | 3 CommentsAt this rate, I might return my ‘blog to the categoryless land of Blogspot due do WordPress’s philanderings. To me, presentation of a website is everything: if it looks bad, I’m not interested. WordPress do not allow you to mess about with the stylesheets, so I have to choose one off of a list. I don’t necessarily like any of these. Actually, the one I did like has now been slightly modified so that the headings in the sidebar look awful and as a result, I’ve had to change to a less aesthetic theme.
Problems:
| WordPress | Blogspot |
| No style flexibility | No categories |
| Impossible to insert scripts (say, for Google analytics) | No import function |
I expect that Blogspot will soon include a feature allowing people to import their ‘blogs: they have addressed this problem in their FAQs. The idea of not having categories puts me off working around the first problem for now.
Recently, I wanted to introduce Google Analytics to this site, but WordPress wouldn’t have it: any Javascript was soon changed to simple HTML. This would not be a problem on Blogspot. I am currently deciding what to do; any help would be much appreciated.
EDIT: I’ve just noticed that this style does not make full use of categories. I am now working on a Blogspot profile.
Mr. Beaner
August 1, 2006 at 2:49 pm | In Rants, Visual Media | 1 CommentLots and lots of friends were once grouped in one house. And to enjoy eachother’s company, they decided to put the television on. Anyone even slightly observant will know where I am going here. And what did these friends put on? Mr. Bean. This is officially the most dire, unfunny, unclever piece of crap that has ever been produced by anyone. A really ugly man pretending to be stupid and running around with an aerial is just not funny. Okay, I understand that it was originally created with an audience of four-year-olds in mind, but why would a bunch of sixteen/seventeen year-olds find it amusing. I will put a statement out to the general public from my own mouth:
If your are above the age of six and you enjoy the embarrassingly pathetic antics of a silly head pretending to be silly, then you deserve to get raped by your own grandfather.
Thank you.
Japan’s Luckiness – or – The Music Market’s Stupidity
July 28, 2006 at 8:24 pm | In Muse, Music, Rants | 1 CommentBeing a Muse fan, I wish I were Japanese. Why do they always get more music than us? On Black Holes & Revelations, the Japs got a bonus track: Glorious. This song is as good, if not better, than most on our albums. They also got an album full of great Muse b-sides. Is the music market better there than here in the UK? Do Muse have a better and more faithful fanbase in the East? I’ve also heard that this is the case for other bands too. I seem to remember being told that there were bonus tracks on a Feeder album that were only available in Japan. I need answers. I hope there is a satisfactory reason for this “Eastcoddling”.
All I can really say is, thank goodness for Radio.Blog.Club!
Forum Niggles
July 17, 2006 at 9:51 am | In Rants, Teh Intarwebnets | 4 CommentsI frequent forums, and have recently developed a couple of distastes to some of the things that often appear on a standard forum.
A personal hate of mine would be: “rate the sig/avatar above you” threads in forums. What a pointless waste of time and webspace! Is it entertaining or interesting in any way? No. I can’t think of any content I could possibly find on the web that is more drole or boring than a load of people making stupid comments about what other people have published in a half hearted attempt to get noticed every time they post. Nothing productive comes of this, not even any sort of enjoyment from what I’ve seen.
Another little forum niggle would be the threads named, “wot r u lisnin 2″. These threads always expand far too quickly fo even the very slightly inattentive browser/forumite. What usually ends up happening is the single thing that should never happen on a forum: posts by people who haven’t read the content. You can see the posters thinking, “I can’t be bothered to read everyone else’s comments, I’ll just have my say.” This isn’t too bad if its just a couple of people per hundred or something, but when it’s everyone it gets a bit ridiculous. You might as well just type your comments in notepad and save it to your hard drive.
One last thing that I recently have encountered regularly (some visitors may know precisely what I am talking about) is the lack of understanding that different people have differing views. When someone states that your opinion is wrong and invalid, they look amazingly silly. Actually, I think that it is fair to say that someone who states that another person’s opinion is invalid instantly invalidates their own opinion. This is a prominent problem in some smaller forums and has most often led to the forum’s closure due to the lack of people who like having their opinions rubbished.
Insured? I’m Not so Sure
July 14, 2006 at 11:12 am | In Rants | 4 CommentsRecently, my granddad’s car had to go for an M.O.T., and while it was away, he was given a courtesy car. Well, I say courtesy car, it was a Citroen AX Salsa (1993 – K-reg). When I found out that this was for sale (last night), and in modest (at worst) condition, I went to have a look.
The car was fine. It would be ideal for my first car. It was going for £250, which was great: I got around about £350 for my birthday. The problem was, of course, the insurance. The best deal that I have found is roughly £1500 for a year’s insurance. Where the hell am I going to be able to pay £400 deposit and then the monthly insallments of something like £177 for eight months? I’m a student! The car is worth £250, a sixth of the insurance price. There really should be a special deal out there specially formulated for students. The problem is, I can’t find it anywhere.
Worst Sales Assistant Ever
July 11, 2006 at 1:24 pm | In Music, Rants | 3 CommentsI was in Dawson’s last week (a music shop for the stupid), when I asked to try a Jackson guitar that had caught my eye. I’d seen one of Trivium’s guys using it in a magazine and thought that I’d pop down to my local music shop and mess about with it. I wandered in through the door and approached an immaculately dressed salesman. I asked the said salesman if I could have the pleasure of trying the guitar, and rather politely, I thought, he obliged. He proceeded to wander aimlessly over to the guitar section of the shop, required guidance as to which one was the Jackson, and set off the alarms a couple of times before picking up the guitar.
He looked at me puzzledly before saying, “is this a guitar or a bass?” I was stunned! How can you not know the difference between a guitar and a bass? A guitar has six thin strings and a shorter neck than a bass, which also has four stupidly fat, finger-busting strings. What an elbow nose!
As a sort of conclusion, I would like to say that the only plus that the Jackson guitar I tried got from me was its metal looks. It sounded really toneless and cheap, was really expensive for what it was, and felt really bad. Then again, I’m used to a Stratocaster, so the standards for “feel” were pretty high.
