Internet Page of the Month – May 2007

If you haven’t signed up to this site, you’re missing out. Facebook is an online community much like Myspace or Bebo, but only the bright and sensible can use it. The only people who complain about it are those who are easily confused by the myriad features that make it unique and better than any other community site I have used.

People go “oh no, not another one” and “I can’t be bothered with another one”. I thought this at first. I soon changed my mind.

There are loads of examples of the features that please serious internet users. Instead of having to wade through the hundreds of “wall” comments to find previous correspondences between you and a friend, there is a “wall-to-wall” function that only displays comments between you and this particular friend, with a text-area of course, for quick use. The personal messaging system is very good too. Old replies are not put in the actual message like in an email or a personal message in most other sites, but listed above.

Yet another example would be the small amount of text underneath each friend’s name explaining how they know each other, which is great when you see that one of your friends is friends with another of your friends that you had no idea that they knew the other person.

I personally like the way that everyone’s profile is laid out the same, with the same scheme etc. It makes for quick and easy browsing. And on your homepage there is a news feed giving you information on the activities of all your friends.

In a nutshell, this site will be very useful when I go to university in October.

Internet Page of the Month – April 2007

I found this whilst looking at the Championship league standings on Wikipedia. It is the most comprehensive explanation of the English Football League heirarchy I’ve ever seen. It has answered the one question that has been nagging me since I was five: how do the lower leagues work?

Find it here.

It also gives me the chance to commiserate with the team at the bottom of the lowest league of the entire national system: Tebby Reserves of the Bristol Downs Football League Division 4.

Having spent some time browsing, I have decided that it is only right to support local teams at very different tiers of the system:

  • Southampton (Football League Championship – Level 2) This is my supported team, the team that I state when asked who I follow.
  • Basingstoke Town (Conference South – Level 6) This is my local team, being a resident of Basingstoke. I have witnessed them play a few times, and I follow their progress.
  • Tadley Calleva (Wessex League Division 2 – Level 11) My step-brother plays for a youth team under this club, so this is a natural team for me to choose.
  • Tebby AFC (Bristol Downs Division 2 – Level 22) I’m English – for me it’s natural to support the underdog. And you don’t get further down than having a reserve team at the bottom of the bottom.

I will now be following these teams’ fortunes to further my interest in football.

I Is Back

It may be less codily versatile here, but it attracts more traffic and has more features (like the much important RSS feed). So from now on, this will be my home on the net. And I must say, hasn’t it improved since I last came here? If only I had better access to the internet, I could spend more time sharing my thoughts and making this a worthwhile visit for all you people stupid enough to come here anyway. Roll on moving out and going to uni, that’s all I can say!

Anyway, laters people, I’ll post more important/interesting stuff soon.

Update: I love the import tool [ass-hat]. Everything categorised under “Uncategorized” is what I wrote under the influence of Blogger.

Who Shall Host Me?

At this rate, I might return my ‘blog to the categoryless land of Blogspot due do WordPress’s philanderings. To me, presentation of a website is everything: if it looks bad, I’m not interested. WordPress do not allow you to mess about with the stylesheets, so I have to choose one off of a list. I don’t necessarily like any of these. Actually, the one I did like has now been slightly modified so that the headings in the sidebar look awful and as a result, I’ve had to change to a less aesthetic theme.

Problems:

WordPress Blogspot
No style flexibility No categories
Impossible to insert scripts (say, for Google analytics) No import function

I expect that Blogspot will soon include a feature allowing people to import their ‘blogs: they have addressed this problem in their FAQs. The idea of not having categories puts me off working around the first problem for now.

Recently, I wanted to introduce Google Analytics to this site, but WordPress wouldn’t have it: any Javascript was soon changed to simple HTML. This would not be a problem on Blogspot. I am currently deciding what to do; any help would be much appreciated.

EDIT: I’ve just noticed that this style does not make full use of categories. I am now working on a Blogspot profile.

My Life, In One Monthly Affordable (free) Page

July 30, 2006 at 9:35 am | In Links, Music, Site News, Teh Intarwebnets | Leave a Comment

As many people know, music is at the centre of my life. And being something is awesome and amazing, I want to spread it around everywhere and wipe it all over everyone’s face like I would a good ham and piccalilli sandwich. This is why I am such a Radio.Blog.Club fan. Not only can I create a playlist for myself to listen to, but I can share it with anyone I want.

I’m not being paid by them. I’m not an advertising tool. I just think that this is a great invention: a way of effortlessly collecting and sharing music.

Actually, the reason I am writing this post is that I’d like to direct people’s attention to my playlist and make everyone aware of my taste in music. I’ve stuck a link to my playlist in the blogroll, and I’ve stuck a link in the “About Me” page. As the playlist will constantly be updated, I think it’s worth putting a permanent link somewhere easily accessible (so I never have to type to get to this page, primarily).

So: visit my playlist.

Forum Niggles

July 17, 2006 at 9:51 am | In Rants, Teh Intarwebnets | 4 Comments

I frequent forums, and have recently developed a couple of distastes to some of the things that often appear on a standard forum.

A personal hate of mine would be: “rate the sig/avatar above you” threads in forums. What a pointless waste of time and webspace! Is it entertaining or interesting in any way? No. I can’t think of any content I could possibly find on the web that is more drole or boring than a load of people making stupid comments about what other people have published in a half hearted attempt to get noticed every time they post. Nothing productive comes of this, not even any sort of enjoyment from what I’ve seen.

Another little forum niggle would be the threads named, “wot r u lisnin 2″. These threads always expand far too quickly fo even the very slightly inattentive browser/forumite. What usually ends up happening is the single thing that should never happen on a forum: posts by people who haven’t read the content. You can see the posters thinking, “I can’t be bothered to read everyone else’s comments, I’ll just have my say.” This isn’t too bad if its just a couple of people per hundred or something, but when it’s everyone it gets a bit ridiculous. You might as well just type your comments in notepad and save it to your hard drive.

One last thing that I recently have encountered regularly (some visitors may know precisely what I am talking about) is the lack of understanding that different people have differing views. When someone states that your opinion is wrong and invalid, they look amazingly silly. Actually, I think that it is fair to say that someone who states that another person’s opinion is invalid instantly invalidates their own opinion. This is a prominent  problem in some smaller forums and has most often led to the forum’s closure due to the lack of people who like having their opinions rubbished.

Idiot Students

Having been browsing Wikipedia last week at college (in particular, the article on the ultimate fate of the universe), I spotted a minor spelling mistake and felt that there were one or two sentences that could have been added. I clicked on the edit button, and guess what? The I.P. address had been blocked. The idiots at Q.M.C. had been vandalising pages for “fun”. What kind of person finds messing up a great source like Wikipedia and ruining everyone else’s experience of it fun? What gives these idiots the right to make all the users in the college who wish to improve the site look ridiculous in front of the Wikipedia community? What a bunch of silly heads.
